The next free spam filter is called Spam Assassin and can be downloaded online. Spam Assassin is an open source spam filter, which means that people contribute to it, for free and are making it better all the time.

Both of those choices are fine for stopping spam, but honestly I prefer Thunderbird over Spam Assassin. While Spam Assassin should work with any email client that exists, Thunderbird itself is a client and spam blocker in one, plus it has some very useful features other email clients don’t have.

Thunderbird uses complex programming that gets smarter over time. This works by monitoring your emails and seeing which ones you mark as junk and which ones you don’t. Then as time goes on it will automatically move those junk emails to the trash and you won’t see them anymore.

I use Thunderbird everyday and I am being honest with you when I say 99% of the time it moves only spam to the trash. Once in a great while will it mark a regular email as spam, but that is a small price to pay for almost completely stopping spam.

Tips to Stay Spam Free

Let’s face it though; it is our own faults that we even get spam because we give out our email address so much. If we never entered our email address once on the web, then we wouldn’t get spam, but then we also wouldn’t get anywhere!

So the fact of the matter is, the best way to stay spam free is to be careful with your email address and don’t go posting it everywhere. If you have the choice of making it private, then do so.

Also, set up a free email account at Google or a similar site with free email, and use that address for signing up on unimportant websites. This way junk email won’t find its way to your inbox, but instead your free email inbox. Also, Google has a great SPAM filter, so you could use it as your primary email address too.

Remote computer access is ideal for many people, and they don’t even know it. Imagine being able to access your computer from anywhere that has the internet. You could read and retrieve important data from it that maybe you forgot or just left at home thinking you wouldn’t need it.
Whatever the reason may be, having a remote computer access capability is a great plus.

There are many websites and software out there that give you the ability to access your computer remotely. You can access your computer over the internet one of two ways. File only access is where you will only have the ability to look at your hard drive contents, and desktop control is where you actually see what would be on the computers monitor, as if you were actually sitting there. Both ways have their pros and cons, so let’s discuss them now.

File only access is ideal if the remote location has a slow internet connection, because data file names transfer easily, even over a dial up internet connection. The only downside is that you will not be seeing what is actually on your computer, which means you can not run programs. So let’s say for example that you need tax information and it is stored in your tax software. Well you wouldn’t be able to look at it since you can not open the software and locate the information in file only access mode.

Desktop control is the most ideal way of connecting to your computer remotely, because then the remote computer actually becomes your computer. Really it is just showing you your desktop, and it also converts the remote computer mouse and keyboard commands to your computer just like that mouse and keyboard was actually hooked up to it.

A RAM memory upgrade could be just what your computer needs to make your program’s load and run faster. By doing this, your productivity level on your computer will dramatically increase. So how do you do it? I am glad you asked.

First, you need to know what type of RAM you need. There are 2 main types of computer RAM. They are DDR RAM and SDRAM . Along with those 2, there are actually several other types, but most likely your computer has one of the two. Just to note, SDRAM is cheaper then DDR RAM and DDR RAM is usually only in higher end systems.

So what RAM type does your computer/motherboard require? You can find this out one of two ways. The first way is to read your computers manual and see what type of memory it requires.

You could also open up your computer and look at the RAM, and read it. It should say on the actual RAM memory stick what type of RAM it is. If you don’t know where your RAM is, or what it looks like, just look for one or two rows that have latches on both ends and long but skinny sticks in them.

Okay, now that you know what type of memory you need to be looking for, lets help you get it for this RAM memory upgrade.

Finding the Correct RAM

When you are getting memory for your RAM memory upgrade, you will notice that it will be called something like this “Manufacturer Name 1024MB PC2100 DDR 266MHz Non-ECC Memory”. So what does all that other stuff mean? (And why do they make it so damn complicated!:)
Here is what that crazy stuff means.

MB: This is the actual amount of memory you are trying to purchase for your RAM memory upgrade. The higher the better, but it also will be more expensive.

PC#: The PC number is the bus speed. The bus speed is the speed between the processor and the memory. Which means this is very important and can make or break your computers speed. The least recommended is PC100, PC133 and PC400.

MHz: This is simply the speed of the memory and is recommended to be at least 266MHz.

Non-ECC: This means that the memory is not self-correcting. Not usually the case, but some prefer it.

Pins: These are the connectors on the bottom of the actual RAM itself. When you buy memory, make sure you get RAM with the correct amount of pins. Your computer or motherboard manual will tell you the correct memory to get and correct amount of pins it should have.

SODIMM: Small, compact memory that is usually for laptops, PDA’s, etc.

DIMM: Typical RAM type that is in desktop PC’s. This is what you want unless you are upgrading a laptop.

Now that you know what those words mean, you can start finding the right memory for you. So let’s begin your RAM memory upgrade.
As you probably have already figured out, the higher the MB and MHz, the better. But just how high do you have to go? You would hate to spend extra money for speed you don’t even need! Well what you need depends on what you plan to do with your computer. To figure out your specific range, find your situation below.

Home – If you are just planning to surf the net with your computer, do your taxes, check stocks, banking, and some other non-complicated tasks, then this is your category. So what is the ideal amount and type of RAM for you?

Now that you know the type and amount of RAM you need for your RAM memory upgrade, you can make a wise decision on purchasing it. Also, if you are short on memory slots, you can always get more memory in the form of one stick, not two. It cost a little more, but it will save you a slot or two on your motherboard, which you could use to do another RAM memory upgrade.

Other Types of Memory

Besides DDR and SDRAM, there are some other kinds of RAM. Theses types of RAM are not common among the average computer user, unless the people who built your computer chose to put this type of RAM in it. Below are the other types of RAM available on the market. Some are better then DDR and SDRAM, so they are definitely worth looking into.

DDR2: This means Double Data Rate Two, and it is a computer memory technology that is expected to become mainstream in late 2004 or early 2005.

Over clocked DDR RAM: This is DDR RAM that is overclocked and exceeds the normal operation of DDR RAM.

Dual Channel RAM: Dual Channel RAM technology has been designed to address the lack of bandwidth for memory communication with the CPU.

SODIMM RAM: Small Outline Dual Inline Memory Module. Smaller and thinner than standard DIMMs, they are typically used in laptop computers.

RDRAM: Rambus DRAM is a new type of DRAM that uses a 16 to 18 bit data path and is designed to operate with a Front Speed Bus speed of 800MHz, producing a burst transfer rate of 1.6 gigahertz. Basically, it is VERY fast.

ECC Memory: Error Correcting Code Memory: This type of memory corrects any errors that may cause your computer to crash or not process the information correctly.

SIMM RAM: Single Inline Memory Module. A high-density DRAM package alternative consisting of several components connected to a single printed circuit board.

What are common resolutions for plasmas, monitors, notebooks, and projectors? Briefly stated, sharpness and clarity of the picture on screen is determined by its resolution, which is the sharpness of the image projected based on the number of pixels. Monitor resolution is measured in the number of pixels horizontally multiplied by the number of pixels vertically. The higher number of pixels there are, the better the picture quality. Plasma screens, projectors and LCD screens have a fixed number of pixels, referred to as the “native resolution,” or the resolution at which the display device does not have to expand or compress the input signal. This is the device’s optimum resolution. LCD images used in front projectors and rear-projection monitors typically offer XGA (1024 x 1024 x 768 pixels) or SXGA (1280 x 1024 pixels) resolution. Bigger isn’t always better when it comes to monitor resolution for notebooks. That’s because the higher the resolution, the smaller, and closer the pixels. This means you can fit more info on your display, but the print will also be much smaller and harder to see for some users. But, it also means the picture detail may be better. Thus, high-resolution displays may be best for users who need many windows open simultaneously and who have eyes that are sharp enough to read smaller fonts. Notebooks using the 4:3 aspect ratio usually feature screens with the following resolutions: XGA (1024×768), SXGA+ (1400×1050) andUXGA (1600×1200). Some of the latest notebooks feature a 16:10 ratio wide-aspect display. The associated resolutions include WXGA (1280×800), WXGA+ (1440×900), WSXGA+ (1680×1050) and WUXGA (1920×1200).

Plasma Resolutions

Some plasma TVs only have vertical resolution of 480 lines (often referred to as EDTV). If a plasma TV isn’t clearly labeled regarding HDTV compatibility, check its pixel count. EDTV resolution for widescreen plasma models is “852 x 480”. Plasmas that are capable of displaying HDTV signals generally have resolution of 1024 x 768 or higher.

How do I delete unwanted temporary files from my computer?

My system locks-up at the Shut Down screen, how do I fix it?

This is most likely caused by a program or Anti virus program that is still trying to run in the background. To find out the program that is doing this, I suggest you close all programs before you shutdown. If that doesn’t work, then it is a hidden program that is most likely running. To close that, press CTRL+ALT+Delete all at the same time, and then end all of the processes that are running.

What’s the Fastest Speed for Dial-Up?

The FCC has limited the maximum connection rate at 53kb in the U.S. You will generally connect at 40 – 50kb but that can be affected by many different factors. The maximum speed for dial-up is mainly based on the modem. Most people have a 56kb modem though, which is the fastest modem available for dial-up. Many factors depend the fastest speed, but the absolute fastest speed possible for 56k modem is 53Kb or also around 6.6KB/second. Upload speed is capped at 33.6Kb or also 4.2KB a second. These are under best conditions though, which no one usually ever has.

It never let’s you pull back far enough, and then you have to pick it up and move it forward. Such a hassle that is so easy to avoid with a wireless cheap computer mouse . A wireless mouse usually uses radio frequencies to send the signal to your computer, but I have seen some use LED technology too just like your remote for the TV (I hate those).

With my wireless cheap computer mouse, and others I have used, the batteries have lasted longer than 6 months! I used my mouse every day for at least 10 hours a day and it only took two AA batteries. Cheap Optical Mouse

A cheap optical mouse is truly a great invention that has made computer use much better. It was developed by Agilent Technologies and shown to the world in late 1999. So how does an optical mouse even work? It actually uses a tiny camera to take 1,500 pictures every second. The optical mouse is able to work on just about any surface, since the mouse has a small, red light-emitting diode (LED) that bounces light off that surface onto a sensor. The sensor sends each image to a processor for analysis. The processor operates at 18 million instructions per second, and is able to see the patterns in the images and see how those have changed since the previous images. The processor then determines how far the mouse has moved based on the change in the pattern over a sequence of images. It then sends the corresponding coordinates to the computer. The cursor then moves on the screen based on the coordinates received. Amazingly, this happens hundreds of times each second, so the cursor appears to be moving smoothly.
Of course the opposite of the optical mouse is the old fashioned standard wheel mouse technology. Of course these types of mice get dirty and require cleaning.
